The monitoring of health and safety within an organisation is an important part of maintaining compliance with health and safety legislation, including the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

Monitoring can be re-active or pro-active:

Re-active is after an incident has occurred, including the monitoring of accidents the organisation had or as promoted by legislation and the enforcement authorities.

Pro-active monitoring includes the daily checks undertaken by Supervisors, weekly inspections by Managers, inspections by the Competent Persons for the organisation and annual reports of the complete management procedure.

Where organisations are seeking to gain SSIP accreditation such as C.H.A.S. S.M.A.S and Construction line evidence of the implementation of the above is required.

Where organisations require assistance in the monitoring arrangements this can be arranged with site inspections, which includes the issue of a comprehensive report both to the site and the point of contact within the organisation.

Inspections and Audits are undertaken using a benchmark of Health and Safety Executive publication HS(G)65 Successful Health & Safety Management, which includes a comprehensive audit of the organisation management systems.

HEALTH AND SAFETY AUDIT

Health and Safety Executive Guidance ‘Managing Health and Safety’ HS(G)65 together with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 outlines the need to both measure and audit the organisation’s health and safety performance.

The recent Health and Safety Consultative Document also outlines the needs for directors to be aware of the organisation’s health and safety performance.

Once completed a detailed health and safety audit report will be provided outlining the weaknesses and strengths of the health and safety management system to include recommendation for improvement.

The audit would normally take a day to visit the company to review procedures and to undertake an inspection of the premises or a site.

On completion of the audit a report will be prepared together with photographs, where necessary, and dispatched within 14 days.

On completion a certificate is issued to confirm level of compliance.

The audit will be carried out by reviewing the health and safety management system taking into account the requirements of HS(G)65 as the model documentation.
The audit will follow the health and safety structure illustrated below.
